A story for Martin Luther King Day

Yesterday was Martin Luther King day.  In honor of the day, let me share a little conversation I had with my 6 year old son after picking him up from school last week:

my son: “Mom, did you know there was this really good guy named Martin Luther King?”

Me: “yes.”

Thoughtful silence as he munched on a cracker…

my son: “Did you know that they used to make it so that black people and white people couldn’t sit together or drink water from the same spot?”

More munching…

Me: “yes.”

my son: “But mom, that’s ridiculous! Didn’t those people back then know that we are all the same?”

And so it seems that my 6 year old son has figured out what many grown ups still can’t grasp: we are all the same.

Happy Martin Luther King Day, everybody.
